Happy New Year you guys! How was your holiday? Hope it was simply the best! If you’re anything like me, you might be just a little sad that Christmas is exactly 351 days away. That’s just. Too. Long. But then again, if you’re anything like me, you’re also enjoying the “fresh start” feeling that ushers in after all of the Christmas decor is tucked away and the last of the pine needles are vacuumed up off of the floor.

And so just like that we find ourselves in 2017. I find it nearly impossible to reflect on the past year without analyzing it from start to finish, thinking about the good, the great, and the challenging. I could write a laundry list of ways that I have been blessed in 2016, but instead I’ve decided to share my biggest challenge this year, and how I plan to conquer it in 2017.

Here’s the deal, I’m a fixator. Yup. Self diagnosed perfectionist who fixates on anything I’m putting my mind to. I must admit, it’s pretty bad and only getting worse. I fixate on lots of things, but mostly design and health related ideas. I’m sure most of you can relate to the design side. One day you wake up and decide you no longer want farmhouse decor and that you want to switch to a more modern design. So two garage sales and many Craigslist ads later, your home is almost whole again but in a completely different style than before. So, can you relate? Hoping I’m not the only crazy here.

Switching over to the health side of life, this past year I encountered a mild cancer scare when I had to have a tumor removed (results came back benign. Praise) and was also recently told that the chronic pain in my foot is indeed arthritis. Did some say fixate? I’ve spent endless hours researching “tumors” and “holistic arthritis remedies” in search for peace of mind and pain relief. I don’t think a day went by in 2016 that I didn’t fixate on my physical pain in hopes that my effort would bring relief. As I head into 2017 with the same amount of pain, I plan on working through that pain with a different mindset.

My goal this year is to FIX things without FIXATING on them. It’s so important to be proactive and productive when problem solving, but I don’t think it requires quite ALL of that brainpower I’ve been using up. My prayer for this year is that I will be able to replace my fixating habits with faith so that I can spend more time thinking about the good, and less time fixating on the challenging. And while I may not have an answer to my pain just yet, don’t mind if I do use that all-too famous hashtag and declare that I am SO beyond #blessed.

Are you guys setting any goals this year? I would love to hear the ways you’ve been challenged and blessed in 2016!

  1. I’m a queen fixator and can relate to all the things you’ve said. Do you workout regularly? That’s really helped me actually. I bicycle, which seems to be a lot lower impact than running or some other sports. If I give myself small goals I sort of displace my fixation on that, but not in the same way. I feel so good afterwards, it costs me nothing, and it’s the type of activity that I don’t do obsessively because my body doesn’t really feel like doing it all the time, just a couple or few times a week.

    1. Hi Margo! Thanks so much for stopping by to share your sweet thoughts! I JUST started doing the stationary bike. I do get a little sore after, but I figure it’s worth getting a bit of a workout in! 🙂
