Affordable DIY Nightstand Makeover

The other day I was inspired to add just a little more contrast to our bedroom. I thought it would be fun to try out a new nightstand that could be the focal point of our simple space! After looking around on The Home Depot website, I came across these really pretty and affordable nightstands. They caught my eye because they come unfinished which means you can customize them to be the exact color or stain you’re looking for!

After going back and forth between painting or staining, I ultimately decided to go with a dark black stain since I was looking to add contrast and depth to our space. For this project, I use the Varathane stain + poly in the color black satin, 220 grit sandpaper, tack cloth, and a 2” stain brush. Everything was purchased from The Home Depot. I always shop at The Home Depot when tackling renovation or DIY projects because they have everything you would need all in one place. Makes the shopping quick and easy. Plus, you can shop easily online using their online shopping tools like “My List”, “Shop The Room”, and Product Recommendations. I also love that they have flexible delivery options including free in-store pick up, 2-day shipping to home, and free shipping for orders over $45.

Here are the steps I followed to get this look on our new nightstands!

Black Stained Nightstand:

1. Lightly sand the table.

2. Use tack cloth to remove any dust.

3. Apply stain in steady, smooth strokes. It’s important to go with the wood grain for an even application.

4. After waiting 1 hour, lightly sand and continue applying the stain until you reach the desired color. I applied three coats for this look!
