How To: No Sew Custom Curtains

I’ve been on the hunt for curtains that look similar to my favorite Target ones since sizing on those is limited! When I came across these Amazon ones I thought the coloring looked similar, so I decided to give them a try! I purchased one pair of 95″ light beige curtain panels for just $35! I also grabbed this very affordable curtain rod in the 72-144″, a pack of fabric tape, this set of curtain rings, and a fabric steamer to get the wrinkles out!

When the curtains arrived I immediately opened the package to check out the color. I was so pleased with the tone of the fabric! They are a light beige/gray. Definitely not too yellow or brown. I would say they are just a little darker than the sour cream curtain panels I have around our home, but when they’re hung up you can’t really tell the difference between the two! Overall, I would totally recommend either option! I’m happy with the color and fabric on each. You can just decide which sizing options and pricing work best for you!

The fabric is a soft polyester blend, so it doesn’t have a woven texture that you would get with a linen or linen look shade. Both those styles are great in my opinion! I wouldn’t say I really prefer one of the other. Just depends what look you like best. They are also classified as blackout. They are a solid fabric, meaning light doesn’t really pass through. They don’t blackout our room completely when they’re closed because the light comes in through the sides and top.

If you’re looking to grab a pair for yourself, follow the steps below. And here’s an unfiltered look at the color too!

How To Customize & Hang Your Curtains

1. Purchase All Materials
2. Determine Your Preferred Panel Length:

We have 8 foot ceilings and I got the 94″ panels so I could hang them high on the wall. I could’ve gotten the 84″ to avoid hemming and just hung them lower! To determine your length, measure from the floor up to the space where your curtain rod will hang. Curtains should be hung at least 4″ above a window, but can go much higher depending on your ceiling height! Be sure to hang the curtains with the curtain rings if you plan to use those, and wash beforehand if you wash your curtains! I actually don’t ever wash my curtains so I did not wash these before hemming.

3. Hang Your Curtain Rod

The curtain rod can be hung in a variety of ways. The rule of thumb is that it needs to be at least 4″ above the window, and extend 6-8″ to the left and right of the window. For many rooms in our home I hung the curtains 6″ above the window because I didn’t have enough room to hang them wider as well to keep it looking proportional. Since our living room just has one large window on a big wall, I am going to hang them higher to make the room appear larger! Our curtains rod is 12 inches above the window and extends 12 inches to the left and right.

4. Use Hemming Tape to Customize the Length

If the perfect panel size isn’t available, purchase a larger size and use hemming tape to customize the length. I took 5″ off our curtains by folding them up, laying the hemming tape inside, spraying with water, and steam ironing for 10 seconds across the entire hem! I didn’t even come close to using one roll of the hemming tape, so one pack is more than enough for this project! To find the right height for our curtains, I simply hung up our curtains and marked the spot where they just ‘kissed’ the ground. You don’t want them to float or gather on the ground, so mark them where they just barely touch the ground with about a centimeter to spare.

I used hair clips and chip clips to hold the hem in place while I slid the hemming tape under to iron and steam.
5. Hang, Steam, and Straighten Your Curtains

I clipped the curtain rings on the panels 7 inches apart starting at the very edge. After clipping on the rings and hanging the curtains, I used my steamer to straighten them out. I worked in small sections, going back and forth in a quick, steady motion. I found doing small, quick strokes with the steamer worked better than doing it long and slow! After the curtain panels were seemed, I did a little finagling to get them to hang straight with consistent creases. To do this, I start at the top and gather the curtain creases in my hand. I slowly run down the curtains while pinching and pulling the curtain to ‘set’ it how I want/ This usually takes a few tries and isn’t 100% perfect, but it does help them hang a little straighter!

I clipped the rings 7″ apart starting on the edge of the panel.

Hope this helps! Make sure to tag @halfway_wholeistic in your finished projects so I can see! 🙂
