How do you decide when to splurge or save on something for your home? There are definitely a lot of things to consider when deciding if you want to go with a high or low priced item! Since I’m sourcing products for both our home and yours here at Halfway Wholeistic, I usually opt for the ‘save’ items with an occasional splurge so I can feature affordable products that are inclusive of all budgets. But if you’re debating on a save or splurge item for your home, here are a few things to keep in mind:

When to Splurge:

  1. High Traffic: If the product is used daily or often and calls for durability… consider a splurge! This might be a rug in your main living area, sofa in your family room, or the bedding in your master bedroom.
  2. Vintage or Unique: Some items simply can’t be replicated in a more affordable way. Vintage and designer finds can add such a gorgeous element to a design. Consider adding at least one unique find to each room in your house! One example I can think of from our house is this vintage stool I bought for our bathroom renovation. There’s just nothing else like it!
  3. Comfortability: You can get away with purchasing affordable furniture if it’s going to go unused for the most part. I call these our ‘conversational furniture finds’. For example, I don’t put too much stock into finding comfortable furniture for our living room because we really only sit in there for brief periods of time when we have friends over. But when it comes to the furniture you’ll use daily, comfort is key! This might be a desk chair, mattress, or family room sofa… Definitely splurge on those!
  4. Quality: The look and feel of a high quality item is what makes it unique and worth the extra money. ‘Save’ items can get you a similar look for less, but if your budget allows then consider going for quality!
  5. Made in the USA or by a Small Business: I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. My business makes it difficult to source and link products that are made here in the USA or by small businesses. I’ll continue to brainstorm how we can support our small businesses that are working hard to make products here!

When to Save:

  1. Budget: If you’re on a tight budget or working hard to spend less, there’s always a way to get the look you want for an affordable price! It just takes a little more effort and patience 😉
  2. Lack of Use or Visibility: If the item won’t be used often and isn’t a main focal point of the home, a save item might be in order!
  3. Kids: If you have young kids or a large family, purchasing affordable items might give you peace of mind knowing they aren’t destroying something that’s expensive! haha 😉
  4. Longevity: Are you in your forever home, or do you plan to move someday? If you don’t plan on living in your current house that long, you may not want to invest in expensive furniture you’d have to leave behind (if it doesn’t suit the layout of the new home). We don’t have plans to move, but also don’t know if we will live in this house for the rest of our lives. So I don’t purchase things with the mindset that they need to last forever!
