I’ve been finalizing the lake house living room design for a while now and finally got it to a place that feels just right, all thanks to Joss & Main! Almost everything in this space is from Joss & Main and we couldn’t be happier with the comfort and quality of each piece.

One of the questions I get asked most often is how I make all the furniture and decor flow together in a way that works, so I thought I’d outline some steps for you to follow! This is the process I use on all of my designs:

How to Design a Space You’ll Love:
1. Gather Inspiration: Save designs you love or make a mood board of images that capture the aesthetic you’re hoping to create. I’d recommend looking at digital catalogs, like this one from Joss & Main, to start gathering inspiration! One of the Joss & Main mottos is “Style is what you make it. Make it yours.” There really are no rules to design, it’s all about making something YOU love. Gathering inspiration will lay a foundation for a successful design that feels true to your style.

2. Determine Your Design Goals: You’ll want to decide early on what your priorities are for the space! For example, do you prioritize functionality or aesthetics? I always try to aim for a balance of both! All of the Joss & Main pieces I selected for our living room, like the Molina Sofa, Velvet Chair, and Linen Chair, are both beautiful and comfortable. Since I was designing this space for a vacation home, I wanted plenty of seating for guests to be able to relax, as well as select a layout that encouraged gathering and conversation. Incorporating oversized, comfy pieces, warm neutrals, and soft-edged furniture helped me achieve that perfect balance of functionality and a gorgeous aesthetic.

3. Set A Starting Point: Designing an entire space can feel daunting if it’s not something you do regularly. I know people often wonder, where do I start?! Well, start by choosing a starting point! haha. Begin with your must-haves and build on your design from there. Reference your inspiration board and start selecting pieces you love to paint a broader picture. Maybe it’s a sofa you’ve been eyeing for years, a rug you can’t stop thinking about, or a paint color you just have to use. I knew I wanted a large sofa for this living room, so I started with the sofa, then the rug, followed by the chairs, and filled in the rest of the furniture and decor from there!

4. Make a Design Board: Use the platform of your choice (I use Canva) to create a mood board! Assembling all of the pieces in one place helps you visualize how the space will come together. Here is the design board I made for the lake house!

5. Purchase Product: I ordered everything for this space from Joss & Main. It was SO nice to shop in one place for everything! Joss & Main is the destination for a relevant and edited assortment that lets you create your own art of the mix at home. Trust me, there will be no buyer’s remorse when you shop at Joss & Main. They do such a wonderful job of offering items they know their customers will love!

6. Style the Space: Once you receive all the furniture, assemble and style the room! You will probably notice a few ‘holes’ or places you still need to add decor. Don’t panic haha. It happens to me every time! So hard to think of EVERYTHING you’ll need. It takes a lot of accessories and styling to make a space feel complete!

Hopefully, this helps you feel empowered to design your space like the pros. You can do it! There are so many resources these days to help you create a successful design. Can’t wait to see what you come up with, and don’t forget to stop by Joss & Main to shop the perfect mix to create a home that’s all your own.
