If you’ve ever wondered how to keep your seasonal plants alive and thriving all season long, today’s post is for you!

I recently posted about our fall front porch which is packed with outdoor decor inspiration for your home. I love to incorporate a pretty fall wreath, woven textiles, plaid, and mums of course!

The toughest part of maintaining your exterior decor is keeping those plants alive! So, today I’ll be sharing my foolproof way of keeping your mums alive all season long, even if you have warm fall weather like we do in Southern California!

How to Water Your Mums:

1. KEEP IN ORIGINAL CONTAINERS:

Keep your mums in their original containers for easy transport. Of course, this is not mandatory as long as your pots have drainage holes, it’s just my preference because it’s easy to do the bottom watering technique.

2. BOTTOM WATER:

‘Bottom water’ for 1 hour every other day by placing the plants in a sink filled with cold water. Bottom watering, as opposed to top watering, allows the plant to soak up the exact amount of water it needs. This takes the guesswork out of caring for your plants and prevents you from over or under-watering! It’s important to note that every other day works perfectly for the hot Southern California climate. You’ll know it’s time to water at the first sign of wilting!

3. ENJOY ALL SEASON!

Place the plants back in their pots and enjoy pretty flowers all season long! I promise this technique is 100% foolproof. You can’t mess it up! haha.
