Your Guide to Choosing the Perfect Countertop: Lessons from My Own Renovation

1. Know Your Stone Type

The first step is deciding what type of stone you want. Each has its unique look, maintenance needs, and durability. For a timeless, natural vibe, marble is classic (and my personal choice!), but quartzite, granite, and quartz each offer their own strengths. Decide on a stone that complements your lifestyle and the look you’re after.

2. Stay True to Your Style

While it’s tempting to dive into trending styles, keep in mind that fads come and go. If you stay focused on your true style, you’ll pick something you’ll love for years to come! I was drawn to subtle, consistent veining for a more traditional, timeless feel—one that complements my home’s design and can grow with it.

3. Location, Location! Visit Various Slab Yards

Getting to see the slabs in person is essential! Visit multiple slab yards as each location has a different selection to choose from. I visited Marble Unlimited in Orange County, CA, where I got my countertops. Checking out the slabs in person helped me envision how the colors and textures would look in my space. The feel of the stone, the look of the veining, and seeing the full slab up close are all game-changers!

4. Consider the Cut of the Slab

When looking at slabs, try to envision how each section might look once cut. Consistent veining was key for me—I wanted the countertops to have a smooth, cohesive look. This meant choosing a slab with subtle veining throughout, and I loved how it turned out!

5. Work Closely with Your Fabricator

The final step to bringing your dream countertops to life is working with a skilled fabricator. I partnered with Kona Stone, who was incredible in ensuring the countertops were cut and installed just right. It’s worth the investment to find someone who takes care in their work and can help make your vision come to life.
