Throw pillows are every woman’s weakness, am I right?! They’re just so dang cute and allow you to update a space with minimal cost and effort. Despite the effortlessness they often portray, I know so many of you are looking for a bit of a ‘How To’ guide when it comes to selecting and styling pillows! Hopefully today’s post will answer all your questions and provide some guidelines for you to follow next time you get that itch to spruce up your sofa.

1. Mix Patterns and Textures

One easy way you can be sure all your pillows blend together is to mix a pattern, stripe, solid, and plaid. If you pair one of each together it’s sure to work well!

2. Stick With A Consistent Color Scheme

It’s not that all the colors have to be the same, but they should have a consistent tone. Whether bright or muted, keep the overall tone of the pillows the same and the colors will blend. Also consider your surroundings! Pull in colors and tones from your décor, flooring, walls, artwork, and furniture to ensure the room looks put together.

3. Style in Twos and Threes

I would say the most common way to style pillows on a sofa is to place three on one side and two on the other. That’s a great place to start! I either stick with a combination of three and three or two and three. Adding a lumbar to two standard sized pillows will break things up a bit and help all the pillows on the sofa to flow together.

4. Select Proper Sizing

A standard pillow size is 20X20. Any smaller than that and your furniture might appear to be swallowing up your pillows! You can opt to have all of your throw pillows be the same size, either 20×20 or 22×22, or you can mix and match sizing! Place the 22” pillow behind the 20” to create depth and interest on the sofa. Most of the pillows in our home are 20×20 because I have more modern, sleek furniture that don’t have oversized or tall cushions. If your sofa has taller cushions feel free to size up to occupy more space and balance out the furniture!

5. Use Quality Inserts

I prefer feather inserts because they can be fluffed and chopped just how you want! The feathers hold their shape more than the alternative down pillows do. Many people fear that the feathers are going to poke through, but that only happens if you get cheap covers and inserts! Invest in quality pillows and you won’t have a problem at all. Here are my favorite inserts, and you can shop all my favorite pillows below!

  1. Greta info! Do you put the same sauce insert into the same size cover or go up a size for the insert when using feather? I know it can be personal preference as to how full you like your pillows but I find that sometimes the same size insert doesn’t quite fill the cover up. Thanks Katie!
