Space planning is an essential part of design. No matter if you’re a professional designer or a determined design enthusiast, planning out your designs is a must!

Take it from me. When we first moved into our home I was so eager to get our home furnished and decorated that I sourced products on a whim, without much thought as to how the space would come together. Walking the isles of my local Home Goods and Marshalls was a hobby of mine. I scored some great prices! But found that in the long run, they didn’t stand the test of time. I’d get tired of them and our home was like a revolving door for decor. 

That’s when I made a shift. I started planning out our spaces and curating a design that I LOVED. I’d make a design, evaluate, and make adjustments until it was just right. This allowed me to have a financial plan and stay within our budget and stay true to my style. 

Space planning is my key to creating successful designs. I love creating designs and sharing them with you! It’s so fun when I see you recreate them in your homes 🙂 We recently renovated our guest bathroom and I created this design board to plan the space before moving forward with the renovation. I was even able to schedule a consultation with the Ferguson showroom to view all of our products in person before we bought them online. This was such a helpful process!

Today I’m also walking you through how I create designs boards if you’d like to create a design of your own.

First off, you should know I create my design boards in Canva Pro. It’s an AMAZING tool that’s worth the investment if you’ll be creating designs boards often. If not, you can read my tutorial on how to make free design boards in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint HERE. 

How to Make Design Boards in Canva Pro:

1. Purchase Canva Pro at canva.com – This is a must because the Pro version has a background removal tool that’s essential to creating beautiful design boards. *Reminder: tutorial on how to make a FREE design board can be found HERE.
2. Copy and paste all the product images from your design into your Canva document. 
3. Select each image and click ‘effects’ —> ‘background removal’. 
4. Arrange your items in an organized way. Sometimes I layer them randomly, and other times I assemble each item as it will appear in the room. Up to you! 🙂
5. Save the document as a PDF or JPEG depending on how you’ll be using it.
