Five Steps To Discover Your Design Style + My Style Defined!

Have you ever wondered what your true design style is? Discovering your true style is both a little harder and a little easier these days. There are so many platforms to glean inspiration from, which, as I said can make things both a little harder and a little easier.

I think all of the inspiration makes discovering your style a little easier because there are a lot of examples you can pull from. Definitely not short on options! On the other hand, inspiration overload can set in when you’re scrolling through so many beautiful designs all the time. I know for me I have come to appreciate SO many styles, so it can be challenging to stick to one true style. But if you don’t your home may start to feel a bit patchy or pieced together as opposed to cohesive and put together.

Take it from me, as someone who has discovered my true style the hard way (lots of trial and error haha). Discovering your true style is an important first step to designing a home you love. Here are five steps to discover your true style and a list of styles to get you started:

Three Steps To Identify Your True Style:

  1. Gather Inspiration: Save or pin a minimum of 25 images you absolutely LOVE to a folder.
  2. Look for Common Themes: Scroll through the album and look for common themes that are repeated throughout the album. Pay attention to designers you love as well as colors, textures, shapes, and patterns that appear commonly throughout your inspiration images.
  3. Define Your Style: Consider your common themes, narrow them down to a defined style, and commit to that style for your home. It’s okay to have a few styles mixed together, but committing to an overall theme or group of styles is important in curating a cohesive home!
  4. Purchase With Purpose: Begin purchasing pieces that fit within the bounds of your defined style. Any time you go to purchase something, reference your curated album and make sure it ‘goes’. This will help you create a home you love and avoid wasting money on things that won’t stand the test of time.
  5. Curate Before You Create: Design an entire space at one time. Even if you don’t purchase everything at one time, it helps to select furniture, decor, color palette all at once to ensure it all goes together. You can check out this post for my tutorial on making your own design boards!

My Style Defined:

A few keywords I would use to define my style are California casual, modern organic, modern vintage, and traditional. I’d say our house is a good mix of each of these styles!

Common Design Styles:

Here are some common design styles. Claim a few, or mix some of them together like I did to start designing with purpose and direction!

Modern, traditional, farmhouse, rustic, cottage, vintage, boho, California casual, earthy/organic.

Hope that helps a little 🙂 Let me know what your style is in the comments below!
