If you’re interested in tackling this project for your home, I’ll walk you through the process of adding tongue and groove to your bedroom ceiling to help you create a room that exudes warmth and character.
Why Tongue and Groove?
I chose tongue and groove (T&G) planks for a few main reasons:
- Timeless Appeal: T&G ceilings offer a classic, rustic, or even coastal look, depending on your choice of wood and finish. This timeless appeal ensures that your bedroom’s style won’t go out of style.
- Visual Interest: The interlocking edges of T&G planks create a seamless and visually appealing ceiling surface, breaking the monotony of a plain, flat ceiling… and quite the upgrade from our textured ceilings I might add!
- Durability: When properly installed and finished, T&G ceilings are exceptionally durable and can last for generations, making them a great investment.
- Sound and Insulation: T&G ceilings can improve sound insulation, making your bedroom quieter. They can also provide some additional insulation value, helping to regulate temperature and energy efficiency.
Essential Materials
While we hired out this project, it could also be completed as a DIY if you’re handy and have some spare time! Here are all the materials our contractor used for this project:
- T&G Ceiling Planks (Ours are pre-primed planks that we purchased at a local lumber yard)
- Nails and nail gun
- Circular Saw
- Wood Filler
- Caulk
- Sandpaper
- Stain or Paint (We used BM Swiss Coffee at 75% in flat finish)
- Paintbrush/Roller/Sprayer (Our painter sprayed)
Step-by-Step Installation
- Measure and Plan: Measure your ceiling to determine the number of planks needed. Start from the center of the ceiling and work outward to ensure that the final row of planks on each side is of equal width.
- Purchase Your Planks: Choose the type of wood and finish that complements your bedroom’s decor. Pine, cedar, and oak are popular choices for T&G ceilings. We used pre-primed T&G planks.
- Prepare the Ceiling: Ensure your ceiling is clean and free of any imperfections. If necessary, repair any cracks or holes and sand the surface to create a smooth base.
- Install the First Row: Begin at one end of the room and secure the first row of planks using nails or screws, making sure they are level. The groove side should face the wall.
- Interlock the Planks: Slide the tongue of the next plank into the groove of the first row, creating a tight fit. Continue this process until you reach the other side of the room.
- Cut Planks as Needed: Measure and cut planks to fit around light fixtures, vents, or any other obstacles. Use a circular saw for precise cuts.
- Stain or Paint: Apply your choice of stain or paint to the planks before installation or after they are in place, depending on your preference.
- Finishing Touches: Fill any visible nail or screw holes with wood filler, sand the surface for a smooth finish, and apply a final coat of paint or stain.
Maintenance and Care
T&G ceilings are relatively low-maintenance, but check them periodically for damaged planks and repair or replace them as needed. Regular dusting is all you need to do to maintain!

The cost of this project will vary greatly depending on product and labor costs. Material prices can vary by store, and labor costs will vary greatly depending on your location and contractor pricing. For the best price, plan to get multiple quotes or complete this project as a DIY if possible! As I mentioned earlier, we hired out the project from start to finish. Here is what we paid for our 11×12′ bedroom.
