DIY Wood Beams

*note: we have 8′ ceilings!

Eee! The beams are DONE! Can you believe how much they transform our living room? They add such a gorgeous contrast and dimension to the space which I love.

Before

After

We often think to decorate our walls, but adding some visual interest to your ceiling is such a great way to give your home a custom look. I’m really happy with how this project turned out! Since we basically did everything from scratch, I was nervous about the stain color, but I truly wouldn’t change a thing. Always nice when a project turns out the way you envision it, isn’t it? Haha.

Beam Details:

We hired a local contractor, Austin Perez, to build and install the beams for us. Here is what he used to get this look:

Materials:

  • 1×4” pine boards
  • 1×6” pine boards
  • Wood Conditioner
  • Western Oak Stain

Process & Dimensions:

Austin built the boards from scratch! I can’t tell you too much about that process since he did it all in his workshop, but you can view my ‘beam’ highlight on Instagram for some videos of the building process. For the sides, Austin used 1×4″ boards cut down to 3″. For the bottom, he used 1×6″ cut to 5″. This created a final dimension of 3″ deep and 5″ wide. Since we have 8’ ceilings, the 3” depth is key!

Stain:

After quite a bit of deliberation, I went with Western Oak stain! It’s a gorgeous medium wood tone. Not too warm or cool! As I mentioned earlier, Austin did one coat of wood conditioner and one coat of stain. I wouldn’t change a thing about the color we went with. Which is such a relief! Truly love it.

Installation:

Austin installed 1×4” boards on the ceiling as the ‘base’. Once those were attached, he put the beam over the top and secured it into place with screws.

Hopefully that helps a little if you’re looking to tackle this project in your home! I’m so happy with how all the details came together. We’re loving the new vibe in here with the beams! 🙂
