Help! How do I make my bed like a designer?

Sounds so simple, but funny enough I get asked this question all the time! Somehow it seems like when we make our beds in the morning it doesn’t quite meet that ‘magazine worthy’ expectation we’re envisioning in our head. Today I’m teaming up with The Company Store to show you how I’m adding neutral layers and textures to make our bed like a designer! Here are my top tips for creating the look like a pro.

1. Invest in Quality Bedding

There’s just no way around it. Cheap bedding is going to look, well… cheap. That’s one of the reasons why I love The Company Store so much! They provide high-end bedding essentials at a fair price point. Not to mention they have frequent sales which would be a great time to invest in your bedding! I recently updated our bedding from The Company Store, so if you’re looking to re-create the same look here is what I recommend!

My Bedding Essentials:

Larkin Stripe 300-Thread Count Organic Percale Sheet Set and Pillow Cases

Larkin Stripe 300-Thread Count Organic Percale Shams

Alpaca Striped Throw in Charcoal

Linen Fringed Throw in White

Brewer Matelassé Coverlet / Sham in White

Honeycomb Cotton Blanket / Throw in Silver

20×20 Slate Gray: Stone-Washed Pillow Covers

2. Add Layers to Create Interest

I think one common mistake people make when it comes to bedding is simply not buying enough! A lack of layers will make your bed look very basic and simply won’t give you the designer look you’re going for. I added multiple layers to create contrast and visual interest to our neural bedroom. Blending together various tones and textures, like the taupe stripe sheets and silver honeycomb blanket, helped to create a very subtle yet sophisticated look. It’s also important to layer various styles and sizes of pillows. You can see here how I mixed the larger king shams with the standard sham and throw pillows to create depth and dimension.

3. Know When to Tuck, Fold, Layer, or Leave Out

Alternating between tucking, folding over, layering, and leaving out your textiles will give your bed that designer look. Tucking everything in will make it look too rigid, while leaving everything out will look a bit messy! Finding that perfect balance between the two will make your bed look chic and definitely magazine worthy. Here’s my quick guide on what to fold, tuck, layer, and leave out!

Tuck: Sheets and Blankets

Tightly tuck in all sheets and initial layers like I did with the honeycomb blanket.

Fold: Blankets and Duvets

Leaving the flat sheet unfolded to hide our box spring, I folded down the honeycomb blanket to add a layer to the bedding. I also folded the blanket even farther down which created yet another layer!

Layer: Throw Blankets and Pillows

Layer throw blankets on top of the bedding like I did with the alpaca and fringed throw. Be sure to mix and match pillow sizes, colors, and textures as well!

Leave Out: Quilts and Duvets

I left the cotton blanket untucked as a finishing touch and top layer for our bed.

There you have it. Simple enough, right? Can’t wait to see all your beautiful beds!

  1. Can you please explain how you attach the “magic light” puck light to the light fixture? I’ve never seen one of those screw in sockets and would like to know what it is called and where to buy it. It’s a great idea!
